Edmonton, Alberta is commonly referred to as “Festival City” for its multitude of festival events that celebrate a variety of artistic disciplines including music, visual arts, dance, performing arts, sports and film. We decided that it would be awesome to feature just some of the many festivals that take place in Edmonton, especially now that summer is just around the corner! So here we go:
Established in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival is an annual four-day outdoor music event held the second weekend of August in the beautiful Gallagher Park, right on the edge of the Edmonton River Valley. The festival draws people from around North America, who come to hear the amazing musical acts that come from all over the world to perform at the folk fest. The festival showcases a number of different musical genres including folk, celtic, bluegrass, blues, gospel, roots, and worldbeat. Past performers at the festival include k.d. lang, Joni Mitchell, Stan Rogers, Great Big Sea, Oysterband, Loreena McKennitt, Norah Jones, Steve Earle and many more. This festival is definitely something you should experience before you finish your degree!
The first of its kind in North America, the Edmonton International Street Performer’s festival is now in its 27th year, and has become famous worldwide for its talented artist, who flock from all over the world to participate in this prestigious event, and for its great audience turnout. So far, it is estimated that almost four million people have gone through the festival since it first began in 1984, and the festival has become much look forward to yearly event in Edmonton.
The Edmonton International Fringe Festival is the oldest of its kind in North America, and features on average 150 theatre companies and artists who produce and perform over 1,200 performances each year, in the short ten day period in which it is held. While the emphasis of the festival is on theater, the festival features performers and artist from a wide variety of artistic specialties including street performers, painters, sculptors, and stand up comics. There is something for everyone at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival!

Started in 2006 by Edmonton’s poetry community the Edmonton Poetry Festival features workshops, poetry readings, multi-disciplinary video installations, and many other events sure to satisfy the poet in everyone.
Opera and Musical Theater! The Vocal Arts Festival in Edmonton celebrates Canadian vocal artists while creating an accessible and unique blend of innovative and inspiring vocal performances. This coming summer 2012 the festival will produce three fully staged operas with orchestra in the intimate venues of Convocation Hall and the Timms Centre for the Fine Arts.
